In honor of The Fine Fellow launch today, you dear readers get a small treat. A double treat, actually. The Hoovers are takin’ over the blog today! (Enter loud music and someone spray-painting HOOVERZ over your computer screen. Or really, more like calmly typing HOOVERS in a spaced out font.)
Please allow me to introduce you to my best friend, Ryan Hoover. I’ve known this kid for 5+ years, and on October 6th, 2012, admittedly the BEST day of my life, I married him – despite the fact that multiple times I said I could never even date him (once, because he didn’t like John Mayer music, the horror). This guy is a very talented stylist & designer. Whether he’s sketching out a line of tees that rock, or is helping his clients at J.Crew put together the perfect wardrobe, you can trust that his ideas will be right on target. I think he’s the smartest person I’ve ever met. Well, smarts and styles warrant a bit of a challenge, yes?
Introducing “The Hoovers: His and Her’s” first TFF challenge ever (drum roll)…. It’s the style battle of the chambray shirt! The rules of the game: to keep it fair and even, we both selected the same denim shirt from J.Crew, and each agreed to build an outfit based on a weekend casual look. Will it be a mars/venus mashup? Or do great minds think alike? You tell us! Show us what ya got, Ry….
Ryan Weekend Casual by The Fine Fellow
Gents, any good weekend outfit begins and ends with casual denim. Whether it be a great, washed jean, or a chambray shirt like this J. Crew Japanese chambray shirt here, it has been, and continues to be, the most versatile fabric in the fashion world. Paired with the striped tee, I envision you rolling the sleeves, and only fastening the two middle buttons on the shirt, giving it a layered flow. Paired with the khaki shorts and classic Onitsuka Tiger racers, every item in this outfit can be molded into a weekend dinner, with the addition of a dark denim jean. TFF gave me a generous budget, so I added the Ebbet’s Field Flannel ball cap for those days you just sleep-in and go. The backpack from ASOS is good for our bikers and bus riders (busers?) in the audience, and with just over $160 left, I fudged in a pair of my favorite shades by Illesteva.
Let’s see what my competition has been up to…
Haley Weekend Casual by The Fine Fellow
Aw, so good Ry! Very nice try. And now onto my fabulous look. Just because it’s your day off doesn’t mean you can take a day off from looking sharp. Enter your weekend wear! I love the dark + light denim look, so I chose a classic pair of Levi’s. These jeans are a Real Man’s man pair of jeans. Wear them, and wear them, and wear them, and don’t wash them, and wear them again. Voila! Lived-in denim that always looks good. Not sure if you know, but Levi’s wrote the book on jeans. If you’re worried about inappropriately rocking the denim tuxedo, throw on this hoodie that has a little extra oomph to it. Sleek and tailored. Scrunch the sleeves, and pull the denim sleeves out just a tad. Easy, cool sneaks, and a camo watch add the final touches. Adding in cool accessories like the camo band watch looks put-together, but not fussy. What guy wants to look like he spent five hours getting ready on a Saturday morning? And that’s that. One shirt, one hoodie, a watch, and you’re out the door. Just make sure it’s this recommended hoodie, and not your saggy, high school, cross-country hoodie. Not a good look.
Two good outfits make One Fine Fellow. Welcome to our world, boys.
